Thanon Khao San Thai Restaurant Reviews Review submitted 2nd November 2011 - by Scott I had walked past this restaurant many times and wanted to go. Why wouldn't you want to eat at a Thai Restaurant in Sydney with a real Thai Tuk-Tuk taxi in the front. How cool is that? I went in on Wednesday night at around 7pm. I was put on a table squeezed in between 2 others. The tables on the right hand side of the restaurant (tables for 2 or 3 people) are a bit squishy, on the left hand side are the larger tables (for 4 people) and a bit better spaced. I had quickly ordered a Singha beer as I sat down and it arrived quickly which was good as I had almost finished it by the time one of the waitresses came to take my order. I ordered my food and another beer which again came quickly. It was quite busy and the waitresses were running around taking orders and delivering food. My entree (chicken satay) came out as I was finishing my second beer. Then about 1 minute later the main (massaman beef). Oh well I can handle that though now my table had the entree, main, 2 empty Singha bottles and the 3rd one I had ordered when the entree came. The other 2 empties were removed shortly after. Now the taste test! The satay chicken was pretty damn good, served with little quartered pieces of toast (??) I thought this a bit weird as I had never had toast served with satay chicken though as I chomped through my chicken I thought it was a bloody good idea with the toast - something to wipe up the delicious satay sauce at the end when all the chicken was gone. On to the Massaman beef which was served with roti. Again I had never had roti before in a Thai restaurant though had fallen in love with roti many years ago on a visit to Malaka Malaysia. This roti in Thanon Khaosan was awesome! The Massaman was really good too, a few very large pieces of beef which just fell apart, cutting it with the spoon. The sauce was the highlight of the dish. At the end I had mopped up all the sauce with the roti, with one last piece of roti sitting there, waiting for to be the last piece of my meal. Silly waitress tried to take my empty massaman plate with the last piece of roti and a bit of sauce left. I almost growled at her (not really) but politely asked her to leave the plate. End verdict = at first I thought pretty lousy service. In the end I loved the food and actually realised the service was really efficient (even with her trying to steal my last peice of Roti). For a good Thai meal give this place a go! I'll be back.
